Title: Biomedical AI Agents: From Reasoning to Discovery
Research Scientist
Google DeepMind
Abstract: The field of biomedical AI is undergoing a paradigm shift, evolving from static prediction tools to generalist agents capable of reasoning, tool use, and scientific discovery. This talk explores this transition from passive models to active agents and presents Google DeepMind's latest advancements in the space, including TxGemma, MedGemma, and Cell2Sentence (C2S).
About: Shekoofeh Azizi is a Staff Research Scientist and a Research Lead at Google DeepMind. Her research is focused on creating a new paradigm of biomedical super-intelligence to accelerate scientific discovery, with a particular focus on cancer. To this end, her team has been pioneering the application of LLMs in new scientific frontiers, including therapeutics and single-cell biology. Shekoofeh is also one of the research leads driving the ambitious effort behind the creation of the Med-PaLM series and Med-Gemini, which are Google's flagship LLMs meticulously designed for medical applications. Her research has been published in well-regarded journals and conferences and has been covered in various media outlets and recognized by multiple awards, including the Governor General’s Canada Academic Gold Medal for contributions to improving diagnostic ultrasound.
