As we gather with friends and colleagues to celebrate the holidays, I want to thank you for your resilience as we have worked together remotely during the past year.
We have much to celebrate during 2021, including the amazing science produced by our over 130 affiliated faculty and their laboratories. We also have developed close relationships with corporate partners through the continued growth of our industry affiliate program. And we have initiated several joint programs with Stanford's Human Centered Artificial Intelligence Institute (HAI), which aims to ensure that humanity benefits from AI technology and that the benefits are broadly shared across industries, including healthcare.
AIMI and HAI collaborated on the recent AI+Health CME conference, which attracted over 1000 attendees, the HAI Health Policy initiative, which conducts and promotes research that informs health AI policy, and our $1.2M AIMI-HAI Research Grants, which support 6 teams over 2 years conducting medical AI research with near-term clinical applications.
To assess the effect of AIMI's grant programs, we recently analyzed the outcomes of our previous seed grants from 2019. Five of the 7 funded projects subsequently received NIH "R" grants, including 2 R01s, 2 R21s, and a K99R00. We are delighted to help launch these new lines of AI research among Stanford faculty, and expect the latest round of awards to have an even greater impact.
The year-end also brought a bittersweet goodbye. Matt Lungren, a friend and colleague to so many of us, left Stanford this month to become Principal for Clinical AI and Machine Learning for World Wide Public Health at Amazon Web Services. He is staying close (he likes to say his commute from his home in Palo Alto to Amazon is about half the length of his commute to Stanford) but we will miss him greatly. I was struck during our recent holiday gatherings by the cohesive community he helped create. We look forward to sustaining it with you in the years ahead.
As our world opens up in the new year, I hope you are able to attend an AIMI event in person and to explore our wonderful new indoor and outdoor spaces at 1701 Page Mill Road. On behalf of AIMI Center leadership, I wish you all a healthy holiday season filled with gratitude and peace.
